Windermere Cottages These cottages, and Roper's Surf Cottages , were the first tourist establishments on the Shore side of the Stanhope peninsula. Founded in 1946 by Mrs. Daisy Lyle , Windermere was operated from 1953 to 1979 by Mrs. Lyle 's daughter Connie and her husband Jack Williams , and since 1979 by their son Jackie Williams of Toronto . Connie first visited Stanhope in 1932 as a young girl, boarding at Hal Warren's cottages (now Bayside Cottages ); and Jack and Connie first came as summer visitors in 1939, camping in tents at Mrs. Art Affleck 's cottage (now Edith Hunter's). In 1942 they rented Kiloran Lodge from Leith Burt for the summer for $30.00. Next year they bought land from John Arch MacLauchlan , on which they built their cottage "Jaconnie" in 1944; it had a white picket fence, to keep their three children in, and horses and cattle out (the children being called Jackie, Gail and Janet). In 1946 seven cabins for rent were built by Connie's mother, Mrs. Daisy Lyle (later Mrs. Purser ).
