The very attractive and well-kept “Del-Mar” cottages, also on the Gulf side, are owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Campbell, who bought 2 acres of land from John Arch MacLauchlan in 1945. They built their first cottage in 1946, followed by two more in 1948, and a further four in 1959. Like many other tourist operators here, the Campbells have regular guests who come back year after year.
In the same area along the Gulf Shore highway, Eileen and Louis Bagnall bought half an acre of land from John Arch MacLauchlan ‘in 1949, and built a cottage for themselves in 1953, later building 3 more for rent to tourists, the business being known as “Goodview Cottages”. Later they bought an adjoining lot with a cottage on it from Jack Kirby. Their two daughters, now married, used to help in the tourist operation. The Bagnalls have had many “repeat” guests, returning year after year; one family has stayed with them for 26 consecutive summers.
Next to Goodview Cottages are four housekeeping cottages, “Hopestan Acres”, built and operated by Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Coffin, and since Mr. Coffin’ s death operated by Mrs. Coffin. Clifford Campbell’s “Pine Cottages” are nearby, and farther west are “Ranch- land Cottages”, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Jay,
who bought the land in the late 19508 from Hubert Roberts and built their own cottage, “Shalimar”. Later they added a restaurant, the
“Ranch House”, which was in operation in 1961 and 1962 (and was sadly missed -— they had the best fish’n’chips). After this, the Jays built another cottage, for rent, and converted the restaurant into a gift shop. In 1973 they built 5 more cottages and closed the gift shop.
Behind Ranchland Bob and Doris LeClair have their cottage on half an acre of land; previously they had two rental cottages. Just across MacDougall Road from Ranchland is “Driftwood Cottage”; for an account of this and earlier Driftwood cottages and restaurant please see the family history of the owners, George and Janey Shelfoon. The former “Ebb-Tide Cottages”, and “Sandpiper Cot- tages” , are located next to each other. off MacMillan’ 3 Lane. Ebb- Tide was started by Florence Shelfoon, sister of George of Driftwood. She and her husband Leonard McGeough bought 21/2 acres of land 1n 1961 from Hubert Roberts, and operated a tourist business with a number of rental cottages and a long utility and storage building (from Army Surplus); this building is now the four “Sandpiper” house- keeping units. In the early 19703 Donna Shelfoon, sister of Florence and George above, and her husband Norman Smith, bought 2 acres of land from Hubert Roberts, via Soloman and Rita Tweel, and started the Sandpiper tourist business; the Smiths sold the business to George and Barbara Woodhead in 1980. The McGeoughs continued to run Ebb-Tide until about 5 years ago, when they sold the cottages, which
