such a location was that the minister, who did a great deal of travel by water, had to leave by boat shortly after the ceremony. This evening Lawrence Brown and Jean Jamieson were wedded and bedded in the new house. (Diary of William Drummond for 21 December, 1770).

Lawrencewas born probably about 1745, was living in April, 1798, (census) and in 1803 (petition re James Curtis) and died before October 18, 1806, when James Curtis, the Montgomery agent, wrote to “Mrs. Jane Brown, Cove Head”, mentioning rents due on the Browns’ 300 acre farm. Jean was born about 1750 and she was alive in 1807 when Robert Montgomery wrote to James Curtis on April 15 The Widow Brown I presume has either accepted my offer, or left the farm indeed the latter is the best thing she can do, unless her son & she have a joint lease of so much only as they can farm to advantage.

Lawrence and Jean had ten sons and three daughters, and they had a lease of 300 acres of land on the west side of Stanhope Cove from Sir James Montgomery, the deed dated 1 August, 1797. James Curtis’ accounts show that Lawrence paid rent of £7.10.0 per annum on his land. He was succeeded on the shore portion by his son John, and grandson John, and on the western portion by his grandson Malcolm. (Ira Brown papers, PAPEI)

Family tradition holds that Lawrence Brown was related to Robert Burns: Lawrence was the son of Gilbert Brown, and a brother of Agnes Brown, who married William Burns on December 15, 1757. Their eldest son Robert, the poet, was born on January 25, 1759, and was thus Lawrence’s nephew.

There is only one member of the Brown family living in Stanhope today, Mrs. Warren Marshall, our much-valued church organist.
