He worked on the family farm as a boy and young man, and at age 24 began to spend the winters in on account of ill-health. It was thought that the milder winter there would be good for him. He spent the winters of 1907-1914 in , working in a lunch-room and then in a restaurant, where he did very well. In 1914 Ray had to return to Stanhope because of his father's ill-health. David died in 1915 and Ray took over the farm.
