in Charlottetown, a position he held until he retired. George and Charlotte had two children:
1. Cassie Jane was born on September 21, 1892 and married her cousin Walter Marshall on September 28, 1927; Walter was born on June 3, 1886, the son of Robert and Cordelia Marshall; he died on July 13, 1958. Cassie now lives with her nephew Ira Marshall. She has been a great help to the History Committee, with her keen mind and good memory for events of many years ago; we are much indebted to her. Cassie and Walter had no family. See Marshall family history for more on Cassie.
2. George Louis, their other child was born in 1896 and died at age two days. George Henry and Charlotte Douglas, their son George Louis, and their son-in-law Walter are buried in West Covehead cemetery.
James Henry Douglas
He was the third child of Edward and Ellen Douglas, born in 1855. He bought the “Mount Joy” farm from David Lawson in 1881; the farm consisted of sixty-six and two-thirds acres, and a View of the house and farm buildings may be seen on page 73 of Meacham’s 1880 Atlas. James Henry was both a farmer and fisherman; he was a champion at boning and filleting fish, and won many contests. He was interested in the betterment of the community, and very much enjoyed the company of people, both young and old; he was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church. He married Minnie Matilda Coffin of Savage Harbour. Shortly after the birth of their son Percy in 1893 Minnie became ill. The Douglas family were very kind to her and cared for her until her parents offered to take her to their home, where she died on September 12, 1900, aged 27 years, leaving James Henry to rear their seven year old son. This he did to the best of his ability, continuing to live at “Mount Joy” until his death on J anaury 27, 1930.
James Henry and Minnie Douglas are buried in West St. Peter’s cemetery.
Percy Leigh Douglas
He was the only child of James Henry and Minnie above, born in 1893. He married Agnes Matilda Gillespie (1890-1976), daughter of William Craig and Sarah (Cox) Gillespie of Sherwood. In 1914-5 Percy bought the Mount Joy farm and carried on mixed farming, with milk cows, hogs and potatoes. For many summers they supplied Stanhope Beach Inn with milk and cream. In 1934 they bought the Jesse Watts property in West Covehead, and later, in 1959 they purchased 13 acres of land adjoining their farm from Joseph Robison.
When Percy was three years old, he fell off a “longer” fence, breaking his hip; as a result he was very lame, but always managed to work hard. As well as his mixed farming operation, Percy was a
