Celestin (Sid) Gauthier home formerly part of the M utch Cohnery. Parks Canada - Joe Hickey
He worked for Charles Burt, who operated a lobster factory on the shore of Covehead Bay, just below his farmhouse (later Kiloran Lodge). Celestin, known as “Sid”, also worked for Charles Earle, who was a fish buyer. Sid also fished out of Covehead Harbour, and captained the boat which hauled fish from Covehead to Rustico, Where it was packed by the Portland Packing Company.
Celestin married Rose Burt, daughter of Charles above, and when the Burt factory was eventually closed, the building was hauled up from the shore onto the Burt property, to be a home for Sid and Rose. This was in 1932, and the hauling was done by Sid, using a stumping machine. The factory building was enlarged and a hip roof added to make it suitable for a home; it is still standing on the Bayshore Road, still owned by the Gauthiers. ‘
Sid and Rose worked as staff at Stanhope Beach Inn in the early 19308, before Mr. and Mrs. Neil Gallant. The Gauthiers moved from
Stanhope to Charlottetown in 1942.
