widower on his marriage license on February 2, 1898 to Hannah Gill (b. ; d. Sept. 25, 1915 at Suffolk , bur. at York ), daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Wares) Gill of . The first written record of John R. Gill on P.E.I , is in the 1881 census, where we find him living with his uncle Abram Gill in Little York . He was known by the name "John R." to distinguish him from some of his P.E.I. " John Gill " cousins, viz., "Little Jack" and " Jack" (presumably from ). He must have inherited some of his father's knack for carpentry, as he is listed as building an eight-ton schooner, the Emerald , in 1886 (from the P.E.I. Shipping Registry). After their marriage, John R. and Hannah Gill lived at Corner for eleven years on 48 Vi acres of land purchased from Peter Brodie in December, 1898, and sold to Isaac Lawson in September, 1909, before moving to Suffolk where they bought 77VS acres from Ammon Harper in November, 1909. John R. must have been some?? what of a speculator, as we find he purchased other properties, and re-sold them in a short time. One of these was the 100-acre Douglas Farm on the Stanhope bought from Percy Douglas in April, 1917, keeping it for only four years before selling it to his brother, George Gill . John R. and Hannah had no children. George Gill , son of John and Mary (Morris) Gill, was born in 1860 at Robinson's Head, Newfoundland ; he died on August 22, 1941 in Stanhope and is buried in the Stanhope cemetery. In 1890 he married Mary Victoria Moore (b. June, 1870, Robinson's Head, Nfld., d. 27 Apr., 1935, Stanhope , bur. Stanhope cem.). After their Newfoundland marriage, George and Mary Gill came to P.E.I , in 1891, first making their home at Cape, where their children were born, before buying 54 acres of land on the south side of the Stanhope (the former John "Sandy" MacAulay property) on March 15, 1901. George Gill hauled his home from Cape and added it to the former MacAulay house, naming it "the big body house". George fished out of Covehead Harbour , as well as doing some farming. After George Gill 's death, this farm was purchased by a neighbour, Ray Carr , in December, 1943. Children of George and Mary (Moore) Gill 1.
