fflGGINS, EARL AND LOIS As far as we know, this family is not related to the early Higgins who lived in Stanhope , described in the previous sections. Earl was born in 1915, the son of John Watson Higgins , and he died in 1979. Lois was born in 1918, the daughter of Jack and Hazel (MacMillan) Warren. Earl and Lois bought a quarter-acre of land from Lloyd Shaw in 1952, built a cottage, and operated a canteen, in the summers only, situated on the boundary near where the "Supermarket" is today. They came to live year-round in Stanhope from Parkdale in 1956, when they bought Harry MacLauchlan 's store (July 1, 1956). They operated this business with the help of their four sons, living over the store, which burned on June 17, 1959. After this disaster, Earl and Lois worked at the canteen at the , living in a cottage nearby. Later they converted this into a store which they operated while continuing to work at the canteen; they lived in a trailer behind the store, which was close to the boundary. There was a fire in this store, too, and in 1969 Earl and Lois moved back to Charlottetown , living in . Children of Earl and Lois (Warren) Higgins 1. HONSBERGER James Arthur Honsberger was born on October 23, 1949, the son of James Ronald and Marion Honsberger of , Ontario . His wife Margaret Anne was born on December 31, 1952, the daughter of Marie and Shirley Mountain of Newcastle, N.B. They were married on October 6, 1973 and came to Stanhope in the summer of 1975 from Harrington, P.E.I. Jim took up a teaching position at the Provincial Vocational Institute in 1973, and now is Recreation Officer for Holland College. His wife Peggy has an Interior Design business; she is at present (1984) Superintendent of the Stanhope Sunday School. The Honsberger family rented a bungalow from Lawrence Quick for two years and then bought a lot from Harry MacLauchlan on Parson's and built a house there in 1977. 337
