with their wagon loaded with sheaves of grain, or whatever they were harvesting from their 62 acres, en route to the Hughes farm in Cove- head (where Bill Vanderaa lives now), which is where we think they were living. When the Lanks sold the land in 1905 to Will and Rupert Ross, the buildings were so dilapidated that the Ross brothers pulled them down and built a new house and barn. LANNAN The Lannans, like many other families in the Stanhope area, were followers of the sea, and came to live here for a time while working as helpers ??? "harbour hands" ??? to resident fishermen. William (Billy) Lannan was one such person. He came here from and lived for a time, in the early 1930s, at the home of his father-in-law, Joseph McCormack , on the Stanhope , where the Ostridge sub-division is today. In 1931 and 1932 he paid $2.00 school tax on 50 acres of land, probably his father-in-law's, as the latter is not noted as paying any tax. In the 1950s William again came to live in Stanhope , this time at the harbour, to fish with Will Ross and later with other fishermen. The family later moved to a house on the John Arch MacLauchlan property, from where the two older children, Arnold, born February 10, 1943, and Joseph, born June 5, 1948, attended Stanhope School. Another son, Alan, died in 1983 in Charlottetown ; William (Billy) died in Grand Tracadie . LAWSON The Lawson family in Stanhope can trace their ancestry back to 354
