of a direct descendant, Alan Lawson, who resides in Half Moon Bay, B.C.)
David appears to have been quite a businessman. He owned, besides his Stanhope property, shares in a Gas Works in Charlottetown, as well as property there. He was a Justice of the Peace and a fence viewer.
Ray Carr, who was 100 years old on August 24, 1983, remembers the Lawson house that his father, David Carr, tore down when Ray was just a small boy; he remembers walking and playing on the floor joists and sills while his father was working.
William, born in 1788, the youngest of this part of the family, nicknamed “Big William” by his friends, was a farm labourer in the community. He was unmarried and did not own land. It is said that he was a great favourite at concerts and parties for his rendering of the good old Scottish songs. His very powerful musical voice was a trait common in the Lawson family, most of whom were great singers. In his case “hot toddies” of Scotch helped to produce extra volume. He died in July, 1867 after a severe illness of four months duration.
David and Ann were the only children of William and Mary (Shaw) Lawson to settle in Stanhope and raise their families here. We will continue later with David’s family, while Ann’s will be found in the Bovyer history.
