James Curtis Lawson, above, the eldest child of William and Ann, was married to Margaret C. Auld. It is said that James was given Curtis as his second name after his Uncle James Curtis, Montgomery’s agent. Every one of their children was given “Curtis” as a second name, as well as many in succeeding generations. James, born in 1792 on the Dollery Farm, lived on the Bay Shore in 1863 between the MacLauchlan and Shaw properties. In the 1861 census, this family was successfully farming 90 acres of land, growing wheat, barley, oats, potatoes and turnips. They had 12 cattle, 44 sheep and 4 horses, as well as a number of hogs. They made their own butter and cheese and manufactured 120 yards of fulled cloth that year. Like other people of that time and area, they were able to support a family of 8 children. James Curtis died of inflammation of the lungs; and 4 days later Margaret, his beloved wife, who constantly attended him during his long illness, took sick and died of pleurisy and inflammation of the lungs. (from the Patriot, 27 May, 1869).
