and Frank MacAulay , who have been long-time summer residents in Stanhope , and who are descended from the Cardigan MacAulays . McCABE The "Daddy" of all the McCabes of Stanhope was one John McCabe who was known down through the years as "Daddy Cabe". John, born in 1814, came to P.E.I , from County Monaghan , Ireland, arriving in Charlottetown in 1830 aboard the ship Thomas Gelson , after a voyage of seven weeks. He settled first in the eastern part of the Island, where he leased 50 acres of land in Bear River in 1843. Records would indicate that around 1850 he married Anne Duffy (b. 1828, d. 17 Nov., 1908, bur. St. Eugene's cem.), who also emigrated from Ireland. In the early 1860s John served in the American Civil War and it was after his return to P.E.I , that he moved to the Stanhope area. He lived with his wife, Anne, and family at Corner , being deeded ten acres of land therein 1877 from Joseph Pope , Commissioner of Public Lands. In 1931 this ten acres was divided, with the six-acre parcel on Corner going to Francis McCabe , son of John, and the remaining four acres on the Stanhope going to James McCabe , another son of John. After Mrs. James McCabe 's death in 1932, the four-acre parcel was purchased by Don Gillis and in 1937 by John Charles and Margaret MacAulay , while James McCabe spent his remaining years at the home of his son, J. W. Thomas McCabe . Francis McCabe 's six acres was purchased by Will Ross in 1938, and was later owned by George and Mildred Ross. John McCabe was a labourer, being an exceptionally good gardener. His strength and longevity have been topics of many stories handed down through the years. The latter speaks for itself ??? a life span of one hundred and two years is remarkable, even today, and apparently his strong constitution was evident in that he was never known to be sick or to require medical aid. One of the yarns attesting to his strength tells of his walking from Bear River to Charlottetown and carrying a bag of flour on his back on the return trip.
