chased 40 acres of land from Bruce Leitch on the Bay (now opposite Golf Course) which remained in the McCabe name until June, 1937, when it was deeded from Francis McCabe to James E. Blanchard . 5. William, b. 1863, d. 1931, bur. St. Eugene's cem., unmarried. 6. Owen, b. 22 Aug., 1866, Stanhope , died young. 7. Bernard, b. 1867, Stanhope , d. 1961, bur. R. C. Cemetery . He was twice married. His first wife was Elizabeth Frances King , dau. of James and Catherine (Mclssac) King of Donaldston . From this marriage in 1891 there were 4c ??? Leo, John, Joseph and Annie ( Mrs. Fred Mullen ). Bernard's second marriage was to Annie Smith from the Tracadie area, and they had 7c ??? Thomas, Bernice ( Mrs. Hooper Younker ), Stella ( Mrs. Leonard O'Meara ), William, Mae ( Mrs. John Walker ), Bernard and Lillian ( Mrs. Pius MacDonald ). Bernard became a school teacher and lived and taught for some years in Ten Mile House . He moved to St. Avard's (now Parkdale) around 1940, and later to St. in Charlottetown . He worked in the Land Registry Office until his retirement and may be remembered by some as "Crier of the Court" for a number of years. 8. Francis (Frank), b. 1870, Stanhope , d. 1939, bur. St. Eugene's cem., unmarried. He operated a store (which also housed a post office) at Corner , and it was from here that many stories have come down to us. This was the community gathering place in those days ??? any manner of meeting would be held here ??? even to holding court, as Frank was a Justice of the Peace. Money was a scarce commodity during Frank's business years and his "charge book" was bulging more often than his pocket book, often causing him to wonder aloud where money for his supplies was coming from. But it always came ??? Friday was supply day ??? he would hire a truck and arrive home Friday evenings to find the store jammed with people. He was known to have to take a broom to clear a path to get his groceries and all through the mob. Frank has been described as the "Resident Wit". He had a brilliant mind which had not had the benefit of much formal education, but when called upon to write an address, for instance, for some special occasion, he would produce a masterpiece. On some occasions he would be called upon to fill in when the local teacher was absent. He was known to be always ready with ah answer, be it profound or humorous; he wrote light verse under the pseudonym "Jingling Jock". From this account of the family of John and Anne McCabe, it can be seen that the only McCabe descendants came from the families of Bernard and James. With Bernard moving away from the area, only the family of James, in Stanhope , will be considered here. Children of James and Mary Ann (Flynn) McCabe 1.
