(their summer home), and spent several years as their butler at their residence in Ohio. He returned to Stanhope, and in 1910 purchased approximately 130 acres of land at the southeast corner of the Stanhope East Road and the Friston Road from George Blue and built a house on it. He married Gertrude MacAulay, a school teacher from Grand Tracadie, in 1916. Thomas was a farmer, fisherman, and the light- house keeper at Covehead Harbour. They had nine children — eight girls and one boy. To quote Tommy, “I say, I filled my house with girls trying to get my boy”. In 1955 they sold their farm to Hubert Roberts and moved to Charlottetown, where they resided until their deaths.

1. Mary, b. 21 July, 1917, attended school in Stanhope and then worked in Charlottetown until she married Ignatius Murphy, Registrar of Deeds, formerly from Conway. They lived in Charlottetown, where Ignatius died in May, 1978. 2 c., Mary Helen (Mrs. David Dennis) and Joanne (Mrs. William Hogan).
2. Marion, b. 1 Feb., 1919, attended school in Stanhope and later took a business course at N otre Dame Academy. She worked in Charlottetown until her marriage to Reginald MacDonald, a Charlottetown barber, who died in Feb., 1973. 4 c., Constance, Julie (Mrs. Paul Ferguson), Colin and Anita.
3. Kathleen, b. 5 June, 1921, d. 21 May, 1955, bur. Sturgeon R.C. cem.. Because of ill-health in her early years, Kathleen was unable to attend school, but was taught at home by her mother. Her health improved as she grew older, and she worked in Charlottetown until her marriage to Maurice Creed. They lived and farmed in Sturgeon until her sudden death. They had 4 children — Lewis, Margaret (Mrs. Joseph Baglole), Laura and J oAnne. When Kathleen died, the children were very young, J oAnne being only 3 weeks old, so the two youngest were adopted: Laura, by Maurice’s sister and her husband, Irene and Ernest Dugas of Souris; and
JoAnne, by Kathleen’s sister and her husband, Mary and Ignatius Murphy of Charlottetown. '
4. Caroline, b. 27 Feb., 1923, attended school in Stanhope and went on to Prince of Wales College, where she obtained her teacher’s license, teaching for several years before marrying Courtney MacDonald of Grand Tracadie, where they have lived and farmed ever since. 10 c., Bernadette (Mrs. Ronald Campbell), Rosemary, Frederick, Ian, Maurice, Gregory, Laura, Stephen, Paul and Lynn.
5. Agatha, b. 19 Apr., 1925, attended Stanhope School and later Corcoran’s Business College. She worked in Charlottetown until her marriage to Ivan (Bill) Whelan from Charlottetown, a post office employee. 4 c., Janet, Jennifer (died in 1964), Terrence, Carolyn.
6. Laura, b. 13 Feb., 1927, attended school in Stanhope, 'I‘racadie Cross and Kinkora Convents, before joining the Sisters of St. Martha in Charlottetown in 1946. Upon receiving her habit and taking her vows, her name became Sister James Charles. She worked and taught at St. Vincent’s Orphanage, and attended St. Dunstan’s University, from where she graduated in 1955. Following this, she taught high school in Kinkora for two years. For the next 12 years, she was at Mount St. Mary’s as Director of. Formation. The next year, she was back in the teaching profession, the field she is still engaged in, being Principal, as well as teacher, in 'h'acadie Cross School.
