The most easterly farm in the Stanhope School district is one that was leased to Dougald McIsaac from Robert and Archibald Mont- gomery on October 23, 1844. This property consisted of 100 acres south of the Stanhope East Road, bounded on the west by a 50-acre parcel of land leased to Donald MacAulay and on the east by the division line of Lots 34 and 35. Although the lease was registered in 1844, the 1841 census for Lot 34 indicates that Dougald McIsaac, farmer, was living on'this property prior to that time, having three years expired on a 999-year lease for 100 acres of land, five acres of which was arable in 1841, and with a total of three persons living in his household at that time.
In 1861, the household had increased to ten persons and, by then, Dougald McIsaac had cleared 30 acres of land for growing of crops. On November 15, 1866 he transferred his lease on this property to John Martin, and about 1870 moved with his family from Stanhope to Tracadie Cross.
According to family tradition, Dougald McIsaac was born about 1811 and came from Fairview to Stanhope; in ca. 1838 he married Mary MacAulay, born in 1817, a sister of the Donald MacAulay who was the father of Johnny Donald and Dockie MacAulay. Their home on the above property was located towards the rear of the farm, nearer to the Pleasant Grove Road. Dougald McIsaac’s latest pew rental at St. Eugene’s, Covehead Road, was dated April, 1870, and this family is found in Lot 36 in the 1871 census. On March 3, 1880 Dougald
