spring storm prevented his burial beside his wife in Tryon, so his body was interred in the Shaw Cemetery in Stanhope, His daughter Charlotte MacLauchlan, born in October, 1865 at West Covehead, was reared at her Grandmother MacLauchlan’s in Stanhope; she attended Stanhope School and P.W.C. before leaving for the United States where she married John Burleigh, both of them teachers. Charlotte died at Haverhill, Mass. on March 23, 1896 at age thirty.

(Stuart) MacEachern of Mermaid. 7 c., Lea, Rebecca (Mrs. Edgar Stallard), Alice (Mrs. Percival Wish), Margaret (Mrs. Lee Essery), Ashley, George and Stuart. (see below).
As mentioned previously, John MacLauchlan (son of Alexander and Mary) inherited his Uncle Donald’s half of Poplar Grove farm, and this is where he and his wife, Ellen Rodd, lived and farmed and raised their family, at least two of whom died at an early age. Ellen was noted as being an excellent cook and housekeeper in her lifetime that spanned 93 years, whilst John, besides farming, took an active interest in the militia, and the Scottish Association; he was one of those who helped with the burials after the Yankee Gale disaster on the north shore of P.E.I. in 1851. Of their family of three who survived them, none of whom married, John Arch fished and farmed; Edward farmed; and Mary Ellen outlived her two bachelor brothers to an age of
82 years in the family home. This once beautiful old home fell into disrepair and was destroyed in 1962.

When the two MacLauchlan brothers, Donald, and Alexander with his wife and four children, came from Pisquid River to Stanhope in
1829 we presume there was at least one home on Poplar Grove farm, previously occupied by James Curtis, but by 1841 they were estab- lished in two separate households: Donald in one with a Yankee fisher- an, Peter Sextant and his family of six being housed with him, while Alexander MacLauchlan, his wife Mary and their family, were housed separately — a household of twelve at that time (1841 census). To this latter household, there was one more addition in 1843 with the birth of their youngest child, Alexander, who inherited his father’s 100-acre
