Duncan MacLauchlan Property History
In 1864, Duncan MacLauchlan, second son of Alexander and Mary, purchased 120 acres of land from Edward and Elizabeth Auld, this land forming the southern boundary of the Stanhope School district, as described in the Introduction. This property has been farmed in the MacLauchlan name since that time, being transferred after Duncan’s death in 1903 to his son James, then to Duncan’s grandson Malcolm MacLauchlan (James’ son); it is now owned by another grandson, Harry MacLauchlan (J ames’ son), since 1973.
With additions through the years from adjoining properties of
James Carr, David Marshall, Keith Douglas, and Joseph Myers, and
conveyances to Wilfred MacDonald, Sarah A. Kielly, Stanhope Golf Course, Edwin Featherstone, Raymond MacDonald, Clifford Shaw and Marguerite Ellis, this parcel of land now encompasses approxi- mately 300 acres, 22 of which comprise the MacLauchlan Highlands sub-division (27 lots for year-round homes); about 100 acres are under cultivation, and the balance is woodland.
Four generations of MacLauchlans lived on this property, beginning with Duncan, who married Euphemia MacPherson of Bellevue in 1874. Duncan and “Effie” lived and farmed here during the next three decades and were parents of eight children.
