In the extended genealogy of the MacMillans and their relatives as traced by Preston Rodd, there are no fewer than 22 sets of twins,

starting with Angus and Alex, twin sons of Donald and Margaret (Mutch) MacMillan.

MacMillan Property History

In 1917 Donald MacMillan bought the Mutch Hotel from Francis Mutch, who had built it, together with 45 acres of land. In 1945 the hotel was sold to Jack Warren, Donald’s son-in-law, with 2 acres of land. Donald’s son, George, and his wife, Elsie, had worked at Mutch’s Hotel, and in 1945 they built their own home on the 43 acres left to George by his father. The house was built by Watson Ross and Charles Marshall. The MacMillans farmed the 45 acres, which ran from Covehead Bay back to the North Shore. In 1937 the National Park was established and 20 acres of the MacMillan property were expro- priated for the sum of approximately $1000, which was more than they were first offered. As the Park became more popular, so did summer residents’ cottages and cottage lots. The MacMillans sold their first lot to Hal Warren (Jack’s brother) in 1931 for $100 per acre. Eventually all the land was sold as cottage lots, except for a small amount around their house, and some reserved for their children.
