Abner Bertram (Bert, as he was always known) was married in March, 1915 to Eleanor Jean Gurney of West Covehead, and they lived at Stanhope Corner with Bert’s father. Bert was a fisherman out of Covehead Harbour for 62 years, starting at age 12. In 1918 he bought 47 acres of land to the west of Stanhope School from the Hudson family and had a small farm in conjunction with his fishing (this 47 acres was originally Martin Power’s). The Post Office was in Bert’s home for many years and Eleanor served as Post Mistress from 1938 to 1961.

An active member of Stanhope United Church, Bert attended services regularly and also looked after the cleaning, heating and lights in the church for many years. He received payment of up to $20 a year for this service it barely covered the cost of materials
