Brown, and granddaughter of Lawrence Brown and his wife Jean Jamieson , two of the original settlers from the Falmouth . Martin and Elizabeth had three sons: James, John and Henry; and three daughters, and the family belonged to the Free Church of Scotland. The rent of their land was one shilling and threepence per acre per annum, and in 1841 they had two horses and six hogs, and harvested wheat, barley, oats, and potatoes from the 12 acres of their 47 which were cleared. The Powers are not listed in the 1861 census for Stanhope ; on April 14, 1858 there was a transfer of lease by endorsement from Martin Power to Robert Hudson , and the Powers moved to Lot 36, where Martin had a leasehold farm of 70 acres on the St. Peter 's Road; his landlord was J.A. MacDonald . Martin Power died intestate on November 1, 1860, and his estate was administered by his eldest son, James; his personal assets totalled one hundred and twenty-seven pounds, and James had trouble with the landlord... seizing and selling off the crop for rent. Martin's son, Henry, remained in Stanhope when the family moved away, working for Neil Leitch , whose land adjoined the Powers' former farm. Local tradition has it that Henry was very strong and athletic ("could do a 12-foot broad jump backwards") but was not bright mentally; he would fly into rages when teased. He was eventually taken to Riverside Hospital, where he died. The 47 acres on the passed from Robert Hudson to William Hudson in 1878 via Joseph Pope , the Commissioner for Public Lands; it remained in the Hudson family until 1918, when it was sold to Bertram Misener , subsequent owners being John Misener , Edith Misener , and George Simpson . PETERSON James and Rita Peterson moved from Charlottetown to live year- round in Stanhope in 1973. They bought half an acre of land near the Point in 1969 from Mr. Silverman of Halifax, N.S. This land was previously in the possession of the Warren family, who sold it to Mr. Silverman . The Petersons built their house in 1970. They have two sons, Robert, b. 18 Jan., 1946; and Ronald, b. 3 Sept., 1957. QUICK Lawrence and Jean Quick, with their daughters Patricia and Kathryn, came to live in Stanhope on November 3, 1974, from Pickering, Ontario . Lawrence was born on 15 April, 1927 in Sheffield, England , the son of Joseph Henry and Minnie (Burn) Quick of Sheffield. Jean was born on 15 March, 1930, in Sheffield, the daughter 443
