of James Armitage and Minnie (Butterfield) Aldgate. They were married in July, 1951, and in June, 1957 they emigrated to Canada , living first in Toronto and later in Pickering, Ontario . Their home, "", is the oldest house in Stanhope ; it has been on its present site since 1860. It was built by Edward Auld , who was born in 1816, in about 1840, down by the shore of , at the foot of what is now the MacLauchlan property; the cellar depression can still be seen there. Robert Marshall , born in 1849, remembered, as a boy of about 11, "seeing the house being hauled up from the Bay by teams of horses to its present site." (as told to his daughter-in-law, Cassie Marshall , now aged 91). In 1860 became the home of David Lawson (1812- 1884), the grandson of David Lawson , the first Montgomery agent. The younger David was married on March 10, 1846 to Mary Eliza Townsend McNeill (1827-1910), the daughter of Speaker William Simpson McNeill and Eliza Bliss Townsend; she was also the great- aunt of Lucy Maud Montgomery . David Lawson was a farmer and the Postmaster of the Covehead East Post Office which was in his house from 1860 until 1881, when the property was sold to James Henry Douglas , who lived and farmed here until 1916. At this time the property was put up for sale by Public Auction "on the Court House steps." ??? Percy Leigh Douglas , son of James Henry , bid and bought and lived there with his wife Agnes and son Keith, who inherited the farm on his father's death in 1961. Some land was sold to the Stanhope Golf Course, via Mrs. Erma MacLauchlan in 1969, and the house and remaining land, about 3 acres, was sold in April of 1973 to Lester and Eleanore Szabo , who in turn sold to the Quicks in November 1974.
