Mary Jane (MacMillan) Ross John MacLennan Ross 1856-1937 1853-1927 Gladys (Ross) Down coll. Gladys (Ross) Down coll.
John MacLennan Ross began his career as a carpenter apprentice, building boats at Mount Stewart, where his uncle James was a teacher. Later, at some time after 1871, he moved to Covehead to work under James Auld. Here he met and married, on March 3, 1875, Mary Jane MacMillan (b. 1856, d. 5 Sept., 1937), daughter of Angus MacMillan and his wife Sarah Leitch; they had eight children born in Stanhope. In the 1881 census, John, listed as a carpenter, and Mary Jane, with their one year old daughter Maude, were living next to his father-in-law on the Stanhope peninsula. Later on, the family lived in a home on a piece of Hudson land opposite Leitch’s. We think that John built this house, which was later rented to Angus Jarvis, and later still occupied by John’s son Watson Ross.
