SEAMAN In the 1853 map of Stanhope , one William Seaman is shown with 50 acres of land on the south side of the Stanhope , between the properties of George Lawson and ; he was also leasing 211 acres in Covehead West, fronting on the and adjacent to Thomas Foster 's and William Auld 's lands. The 50 acres in Stanhope were transferred to John MacAulay in 1869. A blacksmith named George Seaman was listed in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Lot 34, but he did not live in Stanhope . In the 1861 census William Seaman and his wife, both over 60 and natives of England , were leasing the 211 acres of land, of which 100 acres were arable; they had a good number of farm animals, and produced large crops of wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, hay and turnips. They had two sons and two daughters living with them, between the ages of 16 and 45, born on the Island. These Seamans do not feature on the 1864 Montgomery estate working plan, nor are they listed in the 1871 census for Lot 34. The next Seaman we encounter is Charles W. Seaman (1851 -1920) who married Lydia MacMillan (1861-1945), the daughter of Alexander and Jean (Shaw) MacMillan of Stanhope . They had three sons: Alex, William , and F. Rundell Seaman, one of the earlier summer cottage owners in Stanhope . Rundell and his wife Jean bought 3 acres of land from John Arch MacLauchlan in May, 1946 and built a cottage and garage. Their son Rundell Jr. enjoyed many summers here, and when he married Adele MacLeod of Summerside in 1966, his parents gave them a one-acre wooded lot on the south side of their property, pur?? chased from Mamie Drew . In 1967 Rundell and Adele had an in?? sulated cottage built for them by Walter "Bus" Matheson. They liked it so much here that they finished winterising the cottage, and stayed year round until 1973, when they sold the property to Bill Rogers , and built a larger home in Bellevue Cove . Rundell is General Manager of Seaman's Beverages and Adele is a dietician; they have two 455
