Hudson) and built a summer cottage there. This land had been in the Hudson family since it was first leased to Robert Hudson Sr. in 1842 by Sir Graham Montgomery, heir to Sir James Montgomery, the proprietor of Lot 34.

In 1972 the Simpsons bought a house on a further 2 acres of land, adjoining the previous 12 acres, from Edith Misener. This land, fronting on the Bayshore Road, was part of 47 acres leased from the Montgomery estate to Martin Power in 1835. In 1878 it passed, via Joseph Pope, the Commissioner for Public Lands, to William Hudson, eldest son of Robert Hudson Sr., and it remained in the Hudson family until Rachel (Hudson) Tillson sold it to Bertram Misener in 1918. Two acres of the 47 passed via the D.V.A. to Bertram’s son John, husband of the above Edith. The present house was built by Aeneas MacDonald in 1940, at the corner of the East Road and the Friston Road, and sold to Bert and John Misener in 1946; they moved it about a mile to its present site, which according to an old map (1835 surveyor’s plan) is exactly where Martin Power’s house was.

Evelyn is a member of the Stanhope U.C.W. and W.I., secretary of the latter and of its History Committee. George is secretary of the York-Covehead Men’s Club and has been chairman of the Board of Stewards of Stanhope United Church; he has also been active in the
