YOULAND

Clement Renouf Youland and his wife, Emily Frances Gill, came to Stanhope from Newfoundland with their three eldest children in 1893, shortly after the birth of the youngest, William; seven other children were born here. The name was spelt variously: Huland, Heuland, Youland, Hulan.

Clement was born on May 13, 1865 at Middle Barachoix, in the parish of St. George’s, Newfoundland, to Clement Renouf and Mary (?Marg) Heuland; he was baptised at St. George’s on June 26, 1865. His wife, Emily Frances, was born in 1868, at Robinson’s Head, Newfoundland, the daughter of John and Mary (Morris or Moore) Gill. Clement and Emily were married in 1888; they both died in 1954, Clement on January 30 and Emily on February 28; they are both buried in West Covehead cemetery.

On arriving in Stanhope, the Youlands moved John Marshall’s house from its site near Marshall’s Pond, behind where Glen Metcalfe’s A-frame is today, to the shore, to a spot in the sand hills behind Stanhope Cape Beach; Clement was a fisherman, and their place was known as the “Sugar Bowl”.
