Stanhope Women’s Institute over the years 1960 to 1979, from which was compiled a History Kit, which won the Tweedsmuir History Trophy from among twelve entries across Canada in 1979.

Susan, Lady Tweedsmuir, widow of John Buchan, Lord Tweedsmuir, Who was Governor-General of Canada from 1935 to 1940, donated three trophies to the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada in 1945; these were for a handicraft, a cultural project and a community history, to be competed for by Women’s Institutes across Canada.

To quote Lady Tweedsmuir,

The present cannot be rightly interpreted without a knowledge of the past, and the more we know of how our ancestors lived, and worked and thought, the more we can recognise their traits in our characters, and perhaps guard against some of their more obvious faults, and emulate some of their more attractive virtues.

We hope this community history will help to achieve this understanding.
