This square, located in the west end of Charlottetown, was used for many years by the city residents as a gathering place on holidays and special occasions. The Highland Gathering in 1863 was among the last to be held on the old square. Having been ceded by the Imperial to the Local Government, and subsequently laid out in lots and sold to residents, it became the site of some of the city’s finest homes —- rather a fitting tribute to the memories and celebra— tions that graced the Old Barrack Square.
The “Donald” of the verse is piper Donald McFadyen, for many years the club’s piper and messenger.
