FATHER P. D. McGUIGAN — 1913-1937 The Fifth Parish Priest of Vernon River
Father McGuigan was born at Hope River on March 12, 1867. He was ordained to the Priesthood on December 18, 1897. He was Rector at Tracadie from 1900 to 1913, and was Pastor at Vernon River from 1913 to 1937. A prudent administrator, a wise counsellor, a zealous and devoted Priest, his memory remains fresh in the minds of those who came under his care and ever vigilant eye. He was, indeed, “the Good Shepherd” who knew his flock and his flock knew him. Ever mindful of the welfare of his people, he spared no effort in their care and attention. During his Pastorate a Diocesan Eucharistic Congress was held at Vernon River at which there was an open-air Mass on the spacious grounds of Vernon River and at which Cardinal McGuigan, his nephew was the cele- brant of the Mass, and Father A.
