REVEREND URBAN GILLIS — 1948-1968 The Seventh Pastor of St. J oachim’s
Reverend Urban Gillis, born at Grand River on October 21, 1898, was the son of Frank Gillis and Annie McKinnon. He attended Bayside school and St. Dunstan’s College graduating in 1922. He made his theolo- gical studies at the Grand Seminary, Quebec and was ordained to the Priesthood in St. Patrick’s Church, Grand River on June 20, 1926. He returned to St. Dunstan’s College where he taught for two years, after which time he was appointed assistant to Reverend John J. MacDonald at Summerside. In 1930, he was appointed to his first parish, the Immaculate Conception Church, Wellington. He remained there until his appointment to St. Joachim’s, Vernon River in July, 1948 where he began his new duties. Father Gillis was a convincing speaker and an able exponent of the teachings of our Church. During his time here, the Church was repainted.
