MOST REVEREND FRANCIS CLEMENT KELLEY, D.D. LL.D. 1870- 1948

Most Reverend Francis Clement Kelley, son of John Kelley and Mary Ann Murphy, was born on October 23, 1870 at Vernon River, Prince Edward Island. His early childhood was spent in the rural district of Summerville, a few miles from Vernon River Church. Later, when his parents moved to Charlottetown, he continued his education at St. Pat- rick’s School, St. Dunstan’s College, Charlottetown and the Grand Sem- inary, N icolet, Quebec (affiliated institutions of Laval University).

He was ordained to the Priesthood in August, 1893, and was Pastor of Lapeer, Michigan, from 1893 until 1898. In 1898, he was appointed by the Governor of Michigan, as Chaplain, with the rank of Captain of the United States Volunteer Army; he served throughout the Spanish- American War, being successively in the army corps of General Schafter, Coppinger and Lee.
