■ ■ MOST REVEREND FRANCIS CLEMENT KELLEY, D.D. LL.D. - 1870-1948 Most Reverend Francis Clement Kelley, son of John Kelley and Mary Ann Murphy , was born on October 23, 1870 at Vernon River , Prince Edward Island . His early childhood was spent in the rural district of Summerville , a few miles from Vernon River Church. Later, when his parents moved to Charlottetown, he continued his education at St . Pat¬ rick's School, College, Charlottetown and the Grand Sem¬ inary, Nicolet, Quebec (affiliated institutions of Laval University). He was ordained to the Priesthood in August, 1893, and was Pastor of Lapeer, Michigan , from 1893 until 1898. In 1898, he was appointed by the Governor of Michigan , as Chaplain, with the rank of Captain of the States Volunteer Army; he served throughout the Spanish- American War, being successively in the army corps of General Schafter , Coppinger and Lee. 41
