The old Bunbury School closed in the spring of 1959, and a new school was constructed on the Mason Road. The new Bunbury School was officially opened on October 1, 1959, by Dr. George Dewar, Minister of Education. The new school was designed by architect Keith Pickard, and built by general contractor William Whiteway of Murray River. Bunbury School opened with two completed classrooms and 43 students. By 1964, the number of students had increased to 83. With consolidation and the population growth in Bunbury and the surrounding areas, Glen Stewart Elementary School opened in 1975, closing the Bunbury

TRANSPORTATION

During the 1890’s, the railway decided to run a line from Charlottetown to Murray Harbour, necessitating the crossing of the Hillsborough River. Negotiations were completed between the province of RBI. and the Railway to construct a bridge suitable for both rail and road traffic. The bridge would connect Bunbury to Charlottetown, making the Southport Ferry obsolete. In 1900, work began, and in 1901, the first pier was completed. In 1904, a steel bridge that spanned the Miramichi was purchased in Bathurst, New Brunswick, and floated by barge in sections to Charlottetown Harbour. The Hillsborough Bridge, costing $1,363,000, was open to traffic in November 1905. Due to steelwork deterioration, the bridge was abandoned by the railway in 1951. This left the bridge open to the exclusive use of highway

traffic.

The year 1957 saw the start of construction on the present Hillsborough Bridge. Fill for the approaches came from the Reddin pits on the Mason Road. In the fall of 1961, the new

bridge opened. An official opening by Fisheries Minister, Angus
