The Women’s Institute-was a major supporter of the Bunbury School. Among the tasks that the members accomplished in their first years were:

. . . scrubbed the school . . . had the black board painted

. . purchased towels and a holder . . procured a box of books from the library . bought toilet tissue (25 C), and soap . bought treats for the kids at Christmas (89¢) . . Prizes and ice cream for the school closing ($4. 73) . . Repaired the school pump . . Hardware for school door (250) . School supplies (50¢)

Notes from an old Bunbury W.I. minute book give a glimpse into the role of women in the community over forty years ago.

June 12, 1952: After the disastrous fire at Mr. Michael Thomas ’s, the people of our district gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Kelly, bringing such articles as bedding, furniture, cooking utensils, etc., to donate to Mr. Thomas.

February 11, 1954: A committee of four, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. MacDonald, Mrs. Taylor, and Mrs. Mason were appointed to gather material for a History of Bunbury.

September 2, 1954: Discussion followed on teaching art in the school, and Mrs. Horton was asked to see about prices of paint. It was moved and seconded that Mrs. Horton order a school bell and the district pay for it.
