Following are a few excerpts from Mr. Chappell 's diary. "April 8th, Good Friday — Mr. Dawson preached at Mrs. Smith 's on " God so loved the world"..... "April 10th, Mr. Marchington exhorts on "Christ the Saviour ". Mr. Dawson was present; after the sermon — a Love Feast — and a good time, bless God . "April 17th, Mr. Marchington drove from the ship to be at Mrs. Smith 's and preached on "David and his troubles". "April 24th, Mr. Dawson at Mrs. Smith 's and spoke on "The Woman of Samaria — a sharp Sermon". "June 5th, Mr. Dawson at Mrs. Smith 's and spoke on "Jabez, His Prayer". Also present, Captain Inkle , Mr. Grant , and others. " Captain Inkle and Mr. Grant are the best bass and contra-bass I've heard since I was at home" declared Mr. Dawson . Mr. Dawson 's labours were too heavy a tax on his strength, although he was a strong man. In December, 1803, a severe cold settled in his shoulder and arm. On the 22nd of January, 1804, he walked to his home from Charlottetown , a distance of twenty-four miles. On February 27th, Mrs. Dawson came to town and reported that her husband was very ill. He was brought in from his home on March 1st for medical attention and taken to Mrs. Robinson 's home. Mr. Chappell 's diary states: "March 3rd, Saturday — Mr. Dawson is said to decline .... Then another entry .... "Tis done — at seven o'clock, Mr. Dawson died". March 5th — "A sorrowful day .... the Gentlemen Masons on the occasion, acted very devoutly .... He was interred at four o'clock". Some of the Dawson descendants are still living in the Tryon area and two are members of Trinity Church, Mrs. Keith Rogers and Dr. Frank MacKinnon . Others of a former generation include the following although the list is probably incomplete. It was given to the writer by Dr. Jane Heartz Bell of Halifax, some years ago. "Col. Dawson (son of Thomas), married Mary Northleigh Montague, daughter of the Earl of Denbeigh. They had four daughters and four sons. One of the daughters married Martin Heartz. From this union were born, Mrs. Stewart , Mrs. Hewson , Mrs. Duffy , John, Charles, Samuel and Richard (Heartz). "In 1841 Richard married Jane Howard . They had four children: Mrs. Taylor , Mrs. Perkins , William and Benjamin who all lived in Charlottetown . Another daughter of Col. Dawson married— ( Mrs. Howatt of Tryon )". From these forebears may be traced many who later became prominent in the Methodist church of then- day. Mr. Lome Callbeck is also a descendant. — 17 —
