1973-1983 Sunday School The Church Family School Over the years the Sunday School has served to strengthen and enhance the witness of the church. The average attendance over this 10 year period was about 84. Teachers faithfully served in classes for all ages from pre-school (nursery) to adult. Leith Robertson , the adult bible teacher has been the longest serving teacher - for 25 years. The idea of giving teachers a break and closing Sunday School occurred in this period. This was partly because of poor travelling conditions in winter but often, when the school was closed, the weather would be good,so for a couple of years it was closed in the summer when attendance was lower. Daily Vacation Bible School was held for two weeks in the summer during the years Sunday School was recessed. An annual Christmas program with the boys and girls of the Sunday School participating always generated much interest. In 1981 a section of the basement was divided into four classrooms so that each class could have more privacy and quietness to study and discuss God 's word. The Sunday School has been involved and interested in the work of mis¬ sions and outreach in other places through occasional mission thoughts at devotional time, and prayer, as well as through gifts of money to places such as CBOMB (Canadian Baptist Overseas Mission Board), ABC (Atlantic Baptist College) and the Island Baptist camp - . For many years Sunday School materials have been purchased through Scripture Press. Starting in the fall of 1982, on an experimental basis, the Sunday School supplies have been obtained through the All- Baptist Publications which is the material. The Sunday School seeks to be "the church in Bible Study." 200th Sunday School Anniversary On July 20, 1980 the 200th anniversary of the Sunday School was celebrated with a special family time of games, filmstrip, and devotion led by Pastor Dobbins in the church basement on Sunday afternoon. Helen Dixon told of the growth of the Sunday School from it's earliest in¬ ception. Special recognition of the Sunday School as the nucleus of the church was given at the Sunday worship service. 31
