Legislative Assembly
Mr. Speaker, who want to move and who can’t afford to move, or have no place to move. And if we can, within Prince Edward Island, make them a more attractive offering as far as occupation is concerned, if he has no interest in farming, if he is discouraged and has given it up a long time ago and he would rather be carpenter- ing in his area, why, then, should we handcuff him to an occupation for which he has no love. (Applause). But we are not going to drive people off the farms and if consolidation offers some people of this province an opportunity of expanding or improving their operation this is simply a program which can well and thoroughly be used by them.
That is all I have to say, Mr. Speaker; I want to leave this Session as the Leader of the Opposition wants to leave the Session. He said have in hands, holding hands I thought he was going to say, but without spite or malice. We have all got to answer to the people in our respective districts and the opposition has to answer generally to the people of the province as does the Government. We have come here to do what we thought was in the best interests first and foremost of the province, and secondly, in the interests of the districts represented by the members here. And one thing that perhaps, Mr. Speaker, is not always readily understood: there is bound to be controversy surrounding politicians. What kind of a country and government would this be if we had come in here on March 14th and patted each other’s hacks for the last two months. It would just not be government would it? There has to be criticism, and there has to be a little bickering back and forth on issues; there has to be disagreements. This is a free thinking democracy, and there- fore, for example, think what the situation would be if the churches operated on the
same basis. L. George Dewar: Alexander's Rag-time Band is going again. (Laughter).
Honourable Alexander B. Campbell: Think for example if a minister in the United Church blasted the Roman Catholic service, Presbyterians or something like that.
Some Member: Oh, God forbid that! (Laughter).
Walter R. Shaw: Why not the Presbyterians? (Laughter).
Honourable Alexander B. Campbell: Well there would be all kinds of good rea- sons why they should do that. We leave as friends, Mr. Speaker; I hope we will all be back; I hope that Divine Providence gives us that privilege.
Thank you very much.
( Applause) .
Walter R. Shaw: Mr. Speaker, I feel I should offer the words of the great King Agrippa when St. Paul made his appeals. “Almost thou convinces me, but not
quite.” ( Applause).
