us all, and more especially to his family. I would also like at this time to express my Sincere sympathy to his wife and to his family.

The Late Maynard MacDonald

Walter R. Shaw (Leader of the Opposition): Mr. Speaker, I wonder if I could men- tion a matter of some importance before we go on sitting. This Province lost a very worthy citizen a day or two ago in the person of a former Member of this Legis- lature. His funeral took place today at Montague. I refer to the late Maynard Mac- Donald who, I believe, was a Member of this House from 1923 to 1927. That’s a good many years ago and I remember this gentleman very clearly. He conducted a business, a store at Montague, and also a hotel. I believe perhaps it was the only one in that area at the time and I had occasion to stay at his place a number of times when travelling down through that section. He was a man of sterling char- acter, quiet, friendly and gracious. I always remembered him for the fine service he rendered as a private citizen and, I understand, as a Member of the Legislature during the term of his office here. I would like to take this opportunity of men- tioning his name and I would like my Resolution of Sympathy to go forward to the nearest members of his family. I don’t know whether Mrs. MacDonald is alive or not. Mr. MacDonald was ninety-one, a ripe old age when he died. I would like the sympathy to go forward to the nearest relatives at Montague and I would like to again express my very deep appreciation for a very worthy and a very fine gentleman.

Hon. Alexander B. Campbell (Premier, and Attorney and Advocate General): Mr. Speaker. I would like very much to second the motion of the Leader of the Opposition so that a unanimous expression of sympathy be extended on behalf of all Members of this Legislature to the heirs and the next of kin of the late Maynard MacDonald who served this Legislature quite some years ago. I never had the opportunity of meeting him but I have heard something of his reputation. A very strong Tory, and a gentleman. That is not a combination you run across every day. A very fine gentleman indeed by his reputation, Mr. Speaker, and so I welcome this opportunity on behalf of the Members on this side of the House to second the motion of the Leader of the Opposition in extending the sympathy of each of the Members of this House to the heirs. I understand his wife is not living. She died a number of years ago and, presumably, my colleague. the Minister of Welfare, would know of the circumstances of Mr. MacDonald better than I because he lives in that area of the Province. Thank you very much.

Hon. M. Lorne Bonnell (Minister of Welfare and Tourist Development): Mr. Speaker, I would like to concur and extend my sympathy to the family of the late Maynard MacDonald at this time. Mr. MacDonald was a senior citizen in our area very highly respected by all and during the last four months was a resident and a guest at Riverview Manor, one of our homes for special care. He had the privilege of having his picture taken for the Eastern Graphic with another former Member of the Legis- lature. the Hon. Joseph Campbell. Joseph Campbell has now moved to a Senior Citizens Home and Mr. Maynard MacDonald has moved to a home that we all hope to get to in the years to come. I do think that Mr. MacDonald served his country. the Legislature, and the people well. He was a very highly respected citizen of Mon- tague and I feel it my duty to extend to the family deepest heartfelt sympathy.
