Marion L. Reid was born January 4, 1929 at North Rustico, the daughter of Michael Doyle and Loretta Whelan. On June 29, 1949, she married Lea P. Reid and is the mother of eight children.
Marion Reid’s Coat of Arms and Motto, Family and Service, reflects her varied careers as a mother, homemaker, professional teacher, politician, community worker and Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. Her Order of Canada citation states, “Her advocacy of social programs that support the family as the cornerstone of society, is reflected in her exem-
plary record of community and public service.
For twenty-one years Mrs. Reid was a classroom teacher and principal. She served First Queens as an elected representative for ten years. Her roles as Lieutenant Governor, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly were the first for an Island woman. A public speaker of note, she was awarded the coveted Toastmasters International Leadership and Communications Award. The Charlottetown Rotary Club honored Mrs. Reid with a Paul Harris Fellow Award. In addition to receiving the Order of Canada and the Prince Edward Island Medal of Merit, Mrs. Reid was invested as a Dame of Grace in the order of St. John. An active member of the Sterling Women’s Institute, Mrs. Reid was made a Life Member in 1995. On May 10, 1997, the University of Prince Edward Island conferred on Marion Reid an Honorary
Doctorate of Laws.
Mrs. Reid continues to serve the public through speaking engagements and fund raising activi- ties. For relaxation her favourite hobbies are reading, and flower gardening.
