Before the turn of the century the wharves in this area were owned by individuals who built wharves for their vessels to load or for Visiting vessels to tie up and discharge their produce. Some of the well known wharves were the Capt. Dan Sutherland wharf at the end of the Campbellton Road, or the Morris and Fyfe wharf. There are others. The federal Government purchased the most used one at the present wharf because it was equipped with weigh scales and good storage sheds. The right to this was given by W.T. Weir for a sum of $5000.00. The wharf has been extended and upgraded over the years. The fishermen are responsible for their own buildings on the wharf.
The weigh scale building has been moved off the site and is in BayView. Another building was moved to the John S. MacKay property. Don MacKay used it for storage when he was in the plumbing business. His son, Matthew, moved it across the road to his property in 1994.
Now one may see ‘history repeating itself’ as the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans is turning the wharf over to the Incorporated (February 6, 1996) Stanley Bridge Harbour Authority, on April 1, 1997. This is a non-profit organization, which will try and bring new business to the wharf for the retailing or wholesaling business. The Lobster pound and Deep— Sea fishing business have been successful in attracting customers. A new element added this past year is for the pleasure ‘seekers’. This is the Sea Doo rental business.
The President of the Stanley Bridge Harbour Authority is Stephen Stewart. Assisting him is a five—person Board of Directors. Dales Doiron - Secretary/Treasurer Directors: David Brown Phyllis Carr Stanford Carr Owen Simpson
The following businesses are located on the wharf area:
Mussel Plant — Stephen Stewart Bayview Antiques Shop — Dales Doiron Deep—Sea Fishing — Ian Gauthier Wharfside Market — Phyllis Carr Sea—D00 Rentals — Charles Stewart Lobster Pound — Robert Carr
Prince Edward Aqua Farms Ltd.
As well as the above many pleasure boat operators request permission to tie—up at the wharf.
The tradition continues!
