manicured lawns, extensive flower gardens, and clean roadsides. The thousands of visitors who are welcomed to our beautiful Island are amazed at the beauty and cleanliness of the rural land¬ scape. The pride of land ownership has been fostered by generations of hard working men and women. The art of hand-crafts is a highly developed skill of many rural women. The success and pros¬ perity of many Island communities has been due in large measure to the inherent talents and education of the rural women. Highly skilled in all areas of homemaking, these women played a major role in the daily opera¬ tions of the home and family farms. This support extended as well to their church, school, and the community at large. Mrs. Maud ( H.S .) MacEwen was one such individual. A member of the Sterling Women 's Institute for over sixty-five years, she was a tireless and willing worker for every worthy cause. Maud MacEwen was made a Life Member of Sterling Women 's Institute in 1952 and her cita¬ tion on this occasion pays tribute "to her good deeds and splendid example which were always an inspiration to those who had the pleasure of working with her". No task was too great for Maud MacEwen . Maud and Herb shared their beautiful spacious home for many community and Institute cele¬ brations. Maud was the epitome of graciousness, and everyone who entered her home was made to feel very special. Due to Maud and Herb MacEwen's involvement in many community organizations, and Maud MacEwen 's meticulous attention to saving historical memorabilia, many interesting artifacts were available for this publication. After the second World War the Prince Edward Island Tourist Association and the Provincial Women 's Institute mounted exhibits of Island crafts at the Federated Women 's Institute Convention in Vancouver . On that occasion Mrs. Maud MacEwen contributed to this exhibi¬ tion, hooked mats which are seen in the following picture. Mrs. Maud ( H.S .)
