McEWEN MacEWEN
In 1809, DUNCAN McEWEN (1745—1831) an original Prince Edward Island settler, purchased 600 acres on the Campbellton Road. The McEwen family had purchased their first land in the St. Peter’s area. Most of the older members of his family settled in the St. Peter’s area. “Duncan and his eldest sons were freehold landowners and shipbuilders. They traded largely with Newfoundland in both vessels and produce. On June 9, 1798 Duncan McEwen was taxed 5 shillings for the schooner, Jennet, three tons”. (Andrew B.W. MacEwen History) Duncan was first married to JENNET MacLAREN, who died in the early 1800’s. They had eleven chil— dren. Duncan married, second, JENNET (JANE) (McGREGOR) and moved to the Campbellton Road along with six of the eleven children. Three more children were born in the second family.
The 600 acres on the Campbellton Road were divided among some of his children. Parts of this original property still remain with Duncan’s descendants. The “home farm” which bordered the “Ferry Road” on the Campbellton Road was passed to DUNCAN and JENNET MacGREGOR McEWEN’S eldest son, Edward (Sn).
EDWARD McEWEN [Sn] (1814-1909) In. Jemima Johnstone — born in Brookfield, PEI. Edward farmed and was a Collector of Customs at the Stanley Bridge and Clifton Ports. They had a family of twelve children. Their farm was passed to their son Edward (J11)
EDWARD McEWEN (Jr.) (1859-1929) m. PENELOPE STEWART (1863-1953), daughter of Alexander and Margaret Stewart, of Cavendish. Edward and “Penzie” farmed the original Duncan McEwen homestead on the Campbellton Rd. Ownership of this property went to Herbert and Maud MacEwen and to their son, A.S. MacEwen, who owns it today.
In later years, Edward and “Penzie” purchased two more properties on the Campbellton Road. The first farm, owned by GEORGE BELL III (Osh), was purchased in 1906. It is located within the Stanley Bridge district on the Campbellton Road and after W.W.I. was taken over by their son, HERBERT and his wife MAUD McLEOD MacEWEN. They farmed here for near— ly forty years before the farm was purchased by their son, A.S. “Buddy” and his wife, HELEN MacRAE MacEWEN, who own it today. The second farm which was purchased by Edward and Penzie was the Thomas Reid farm. This was next to the “home” farm and was taken over by their son, Walford and his wife Catherine (Campbell) MacEwen, on the Campbellton Rd.
