SUTHERLAND
DANIEL was the son of Alexander and Catherine Campbell Sutherland (his second wife), who came to Prince Edward Island from Scotland, Alexander from the Parish of Faff, and Katherine from Caithnesshire. Captain Dan had two brothers [Dr] John and George. Captain Dan inherited the Sutherland farm after his brother George died at the age of 22 years.
Capt. Daniel and his wife Margaretta, deeded the barn, buildings, house and one-quarter acre of land to Capt. Dan’s mother, Catherine, in 1891. In 1895 Catherine Sutherland evidently had no further need for this property and gave it back to Capt. Dan. The Ernest MacEwen family later
lived in the home.
Capt. Dan was well known for the loads of coal he transported from Cape Breton to the Sutherland Wharf, Stanley Bridge. On Feb. 18, 1903, Capt. Dan purchased 1/6 acre of land from Sarah MacMillan for a warehouse. This was located between the Patrick Walsh and WT Weir properties above the present bridge. The wharf was located close to the present Campbellton Road. He received permission from the Government for this site on Mar. 8, 1910. The last boat operated by Capt. Dan. was called the Ripply Ropes. The Sutherland farm on the East side of the river was passed from the Sutherland family to Dan and Margaret’s nephew, Ernest
MacEwen and his family.
DANIEL SUTHERLAND [Captain] In. Feb. 3, 1890 to MARGARETTA ELIZA (1860- 1945), the eldest child of William and Jane Montgomery McEwen of the Campbellton Road. They had no children but brought up Margaret’s nephew, Ernest MacEwen, after his mother died. Capt. Dan and Maggie had built a new home on the West side of the river in the early
1900’s. This land was part of the original Robert Fyfe property. {see Rattenbury Road}
