Purnell JOHN MURPHY AND MARY JANE PROCTOR GENEALOGY John Murphy was born in 1847 in the Rocky Point - area, the fifth child of Peter Murphy (1808-1890) and Bridget Murphy . In early life, he apprenticed and acquired the trade of a blacksmith and moved to New Glasgow , PEL Here much shipbuilding was carried out by the Orr Brothers and other entrepreneurs. On October 7, 1872, he married Mary Jane Proctor at St. Augustine's Church, South Rustico . Mary Jane was born in New Glasgow on November 27, 1851, the daughter of James C. Proctor and Ellen Walsh . James C. Proctor was born on May 31, 1819, in Charlottetown , the son of George Proctor and Jane Cantelo . James C, like his son-in-law, was a blacksmith. He owned a large farm of 156 acres with magnificent orchards and gardens with quite substantial buildings. Two of his brothers, Edwin Cormack (who invented and patented the Proctor potato digger), and George Moore Proctor , were also blacksmiths and lived in the Margate - Kensington and Stanley Bridge areas respectively. John's uncle, George Moore Proctor , had been operating a blacksmith shop in Stanley Bridge for many years. It is recognized in the D.J. Lake map of 1863. By the mid 1870's, John Murphy had taken over the blacksmith business operated by his uncle and built a substantial home on the west side of Stanley Bridge . By 1879, Mary Jane Proctor was joined in Stanley Bridge by her sister, Susanna Margaret Kemys Proctor, who had married Patrick Walsh , a harness maker. They decided that Stanley Bridge , a thriving community, need¬ ed a harness business; so they also purchased land on the west side of the Bridge and built a home and harness shop, a few hundred yards from the Murphy's.
