to autumn or winter did not deter the family from staying in their country home, especially when the goose shooting season opened. Both the Doctor and Army were out early in the morning hours to do their bit to take home that "elusive bird" in the marshlands at "MacEwen's Island". Both were trained rifle range sports people and thoroughly enjoyed all outdoor activities. The decision to become 'full-fledged' farmers, by keeping young cattle on their pasture lands may not have been a very profitable business. However, it was a learning experience. This idea was quickly forgotten. The land across the Mill River Road was sold to D. S. Montgomery who was involved in grain and potato farming. As the age of retirement arrived, the Doctor and Army decided to sell their home. Dr. and Mrs. Beer sold the home and lot to Catherine MacKinnon and Donald Harron in October, 1982. There are three sons in this family 1. John - in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Toronto , Ont. 2. Gregory - Optometrist - lives in Charlottetown 3. Philip - lives in Vancouver, B.C. Dr. J.K . and Gladys Beer 's home on the Stanley River : this home is now owned by Catherine MacKinnon and Donald Harron SCHURMAN GEORGE RANKIN " JOE " SCHURMAN purchased the former Dr. Roderick McNeill prop¬ erty from the Estate of Daniel A. McNeill in November 1981. All other properties owned by Dr. McNeill "at the top of the hill" had been sold by the McNeill family. Prior to 1981, Mr. Schurman had purchased approximately five acres and the McNeill barns from Dr. Kenneth and Gladys Beer . This acreage adjoins the home property on the west boundary. After taking possession, "Joe" designed new interior and exterior changes to the house and began renovations and additions in the Spring of 1982. Rooms were added to the first and second floors, a third floor and elevator was constructed as were exterior verandahs and balconies, all of which would accommodate his accessibility requirements. Final construction was completed in 1992. Mr. Schurman occupied the house for the first time in May 1991. He and Faye Ramsay and their respective families are residents of Stanley Bridge from May until November each year.
