MANSON

ELLA MANSON formerly of Alberton purchased the Smith Store (formerly Nicholson’s Tailor Shop), the house and other property from Mrs. Ella Smith on January 21, 1941. Mrs. Manson operated the store for two years. On December 1, 1943, Mrs. Manson sold the property to Gladys and Max Ferguson, from BayView.

FLEMING BROS. - FLEMING’S STORE

When Upton Smith purchased the store from the Weir family in 1931 the combined house and store ownership being centered on one owner was ended. The Weir family still lived in the house, owned the buildings and two acres of land but had no further connection with the store.

At this time Upton lived in Cavendish and not Stanley Bridge. The large store burned less than three months after Upton had purchased the business. Upton re-built a smaller store. On Oct. 29, 1932, he sold the new store to Dermot Fleming.

The Fleming Brothers, made up of Dermot, D’Arcy and Gerald operated the store until May 9, 1934 when they sold it to Mrs. Alma Fleming of Stanley Bridge. The store business continued under the name of Fleming’s Store. Mrs. Fleming sold the business to Kenneth and Wendall MacKay in 1946.

As well as operating the store the Fleming Brothers built a house which they situated between the store and the Weir driveway. It was rented to different residents until 1936 when Roy Woodside purchased the house and moved it to his property across the road from the present Garnet Gallant home in Clinton.

The house was hauled to Clinton on the ice, under the direction of Mrs. Woodside’s father, Wesley Cole.
