Mr. Garrett was granted his operator's license for a general store on Feb. 6, 1857. Indications are that he did not open a store in Stanley Bridge until 1861. At this time he leased land along the shore on the east side of the road from Samuel Cunard and built a store close to the wharf. The 1876 Mercantile Agency Reference Book states that the Garrett store and business was valued at $5000.00 to $10,000.00 'with a good credit'. The import and export trade by vessel was quite successful. A disastrous fire (about 1890) destroyed his store. At this time Mr. and Mrs. Garrett moved to Charlottetown and sold their land holdings in Stanley. In 1895 the famĀ¬ ily moved to Murray River to reside with their daughter Mrs. GA . Hughes. Daniel Ross on Nov. 16, 1891 purchased 5 acres of land which Mr. Garrett had bought, July 12, 1867 from the original 100 acre William McKay farm. This was located on the south side of the highway. The Garrett building located next to the Squarebriggs store was purchased by Barbara Squarebriggs on April 23, 1892. This became part of the A.J. McLeod & Co. Funeral Business and was used as a storage room for the caskets. Another transfer of land was a plot of land which Mr. Garrett had purchased from Dougald Henry on May 14, 1870. On July 5. 1897, George Garrett sold this land to Thomas Hiscott , Sr. The last plot of land in the village was sold to A.J. McLeod on Feb. 20 1901. The house on this site was moved by Mr. McLeod closer to his store. HODGSON George R. Garrett and his brother-in-law, WILLIAM HODGSON - son of Jabez B.S.
