McLEOD MacLEOD
JOHN MacLEOD (1849-1934) son of Donald and Janet (McKay) MacLeod, Glynde Road, lived in the village, across from the present United Church. The McLeod home was built on land formerly owned by Dougald Henry. John purchased a lot of land from Dougald Henry on Nov. 10, 1876, and a second lot on May 23, 1879. Mr. MacLeod was also the Stanley Bridge Post Master. William MacKenzie was one of his employees. John’s daughter, Ethel, became the Post
Mistress after John died.
When John built his house in the village he used lumber harvested from his father’s Trout River farm. As well as building his house he also built a carriage house and a cobbler shop. By 1889 he was commonly known as the shoemaker. People came from far and wide to have Mr. MacLeod fashion them with high-buttoned boots and shoes which were popular at the time. It was quite a privilege to have your footwear fashioned according to your wishes. Mr. MacLeod was also given the job of mending harness, which was naturally part of the leather business. His small candy store was always popular with the children who came for their new pair of shoes.
