The teasing of their neighbors eventually led to the name of the Taffy Town Farm..

By the year 1841, five years after their arrival, they had two cattle, three sheep and two hogs. That same year their son, Robert, was born. The day after his birth, Janet was back out reaping in the fields, The MacLeods had five more children, four daughters and one son.

When the children grew older, an addition was added to the house. A new kitchen with a stone chimney for the first stove and a room above that which John used as a cobbler shop as he

learned his craft.

Donald and his son Robert, began the ferry service known as MacLeod’s Ferry across the Trout River. This was before the bridges were built. The ferry carried passengers, horses and their loads back and forth across the river for many years. Robert also worked from time to

time in the shipyards across the river. The four daughters married and left Stanley Bridge to move into homes of their own.

One could say that the word “taffy” really stuck to the two sons in the MacLeod family as they were commonly known as Bob “Taffy” and Johnny “Taffy” for most of their lives.

ROBERT stayed on the original farm. In 1868 he purchased as additional 30 acres of land (the BUCHANAN place) to bring the total to 78 acres.

Donald died in 1881. In 1883 ROBERT married MARGARET MacKAY, daughter of their next door neighbors, HUGH and RACHEL MacKAY. Sadly, Margaret died in 1885 in child— birth with their first child. Janet died in 1892 and ROBERT remained a widower alone until 1897, when he married LAVINIA WOOLNER, the daughter of GEORGE and MARGARET ROLLINGS WOOLNER, of the Mill River Road. Robert and Lavinia continued to farm and in 1901 their only daughter, Margaret Janet, was born.

Robert died in 1922 while on his knees in prayer. He had not been feeling well and his next door neighbour, Robert MacKay, came to visit on a Sabbath afternoon in October to inquire about his health. Before Robert MacKay left to return home, the two Roberts knelt at the kitchen window to pray. Robert MacLeod was never to rise from his knees again.

Margaret MacLeod continued to farm the 78 acres with hired help and to care for her mother, Lavinia, until her marriage in 1925 to Melville Morrison. They continued to farm the property. They had two children. Melville died in 1955 and Margaret in 1993. Their son Vernon and daughter June are the fourth generation on this farm. Neither has married and are the last of

their line.
