volunteers were caught up in evacuating farm animals to safer quarters. Wilson J Shea had two hundred of his hogs and sheep moved during the height of the blaze. It took a division of dozers, loaders and all terrain vehicles busy building fire roads and walls to contain the serious outbreaks.
On June 20,1981 Tignish branch No 6 of the Royal Canadian Legion had their second home ripped apart, in an early morning fire. The 150 X 60-foot building had opened in January of 1953. Valued at half a million dollars it went down in a most spectacular fire that could be seen for miles. The fire department again fought to save a nearby home and large woodcraft building. All efforts put forth by the fire departments from Alberton, Miminegash and Tignish were unable to contain the three alarm fire. All historical records and valuables were destroyed, along with records belonging to the ladies auxiliary. Terry Arsenault and his band that played regularly at the legion
lost $12,000 dollars of musical equipment in the fire. A groundbreaking ceremony for the building of the present
legion took place in September of 1981. The opening was held in October > - of 1982.
