Primarily provide a medium of contact and cultivate more and higher standards of community activities among the younger people of the rural districts. The second feature stresses leadership training, organization, and participation in public affairs. (45)
For this second feature, an annual Junior Farmers Conference and Short Courses were conducted.
Junior Farmers Groups were organized in St. Peters (29 members) and Farmington — Mt. Hope (26 members) in 1948. The meetings which were held monthly, often took the form of demonstrations: judging classes, preparing and fitting calves for the show, halter making, and other activities. In 1949 ten members of the Junior Calf Clubs represented the Island in the judging competitions at the Maritime Winter Fair. That year, Joseph Thompson of St. Peters was the “high man in the Beef Cattle” (46)
